The nine temples
Nava Kailayam is a group of nine Shiva temples on the banks of the Thamirabarani, from Papanasam at the foot of the Western Ghats down to the coast near Tiruchendur. We visit them in this order, planned around each temple’s darshan timings:

Tips for this trip
- Start early. The first four temples are on the western side, near Papanasam; an early start covers them before the midday break.
- Papanasam is by the river. Many families take a dip in the Thamirabarani here; bring a change of clothes.
- Carry water and snacks. Some temples are in small villages with few shops nearby.
- Wear traditional clothes and leave footwear in the car.

Can we visit all nine Nava Kailayam temples in one day?
Usually, yes, if we start early. The temples close for a few hours around midday, so we plan the order around their timings with you.
Where do the temples start?
The tour usually starts at Cheranmahadevi, approx. 20 km from Tirunelveli, and goes west to Papanasam before coming back east towards the coast.
Can we do Nava Kailayam and Nava Tirupathi together?
Yes, over two days. Both groups are along the Thamirabarani, and some families stay overnight in Tirunelveli or Tiruchendur.
Which car is best for a family?
The Toyota Innova suits families and groups. For up to 4 people, the Toyota Glanza is comfortable.
